Workforce Planning for a Rapidly Changing Healthcare System

Myriad workforce issues are affecting patient care across the country. Continued health care transformation compounded with mounting pressures amid the dynamics of a changing payment and delivery system will only exacerbate these issues. This creates an immediate need for health care leaders to integrate workforce development discussions into their strategic planning efforts.  

As identified in the AHA Committee on Performance Improvement report, The Imperative for Strategic Workforce Planning and Development: Challenges and Opportunities, issues include the need to:

	Achieve a multi-dimensional, diverse workforce
	Cultivate new, emerging roles and retool the current workforce to deliver care across care settings
	Address workplace safety and burnout challenges
	Commit financial and educational resources toward workforce development
	Harness technology to support the workforce
	Create career pathways to recruit and retain an engaged workforce
